The Critical Role of Database Archiving in Information Life-Cycle Management, by Carl W. Olofson, IDC, March 2007

"Database data archiving must be done in such a way that a referentially complete subset of the database is archived, not just discrete elements, so as to ensure their structural integrity, and that data upon which live data is dependent is not removed from the database. Also, the archived data should be accessible almost as if it were still live data in the database, which means it must be archived along with its associated metadata, and the archive lookup facility must be able to retrieve the data using standard relational methods such as SQL, ODBC, and JDBC."
